Talk:Game ideas: MMORTS
From GPWiki
The wiki is now hosted by GameDev.NET at wiki.gamedev.net. All gpwiki.org content has been moved to the new server. However, the GPWiki forums are still active! Come say hello. Comment I thought about something like that a while ago, too... So, let's talk about it! How shall the game be like? More like a browser-based game (e.g. ogame, but this isn't really RTS), a flash-based browser game (more RTS-like) or a real, real RTS, like Empire Earth on a muuuuch larger scale, starting not in the stone ages but... well, shortly after the invention of the "warp drive"? You still could travel through different ages, e.g. Space-Travelling, Growing Empire, Hegemonical, Re-Focus, Young Super Intelligence, Super Intelligence, Chaotarch / Cosmocrate (so much like Perry Rhodan, eh?)... As I planned in that never-programmed game, you also could create your race, choosing a speciality of your race, stitching together their views on rights of the individuum, their morale, their alignment (e.g. egoistic, outgoing, peace-loving), which kind of race they are (humanoid, insectoid, erp... beastoid?)... To make everything logical correct, you'd be something like a SUPER-KI, doing a benevolent dictature! (http://www.projectvisitor.com/) This game is a mix of RPG and RTS, in fact: the player moves around using an avatar that can carry a weapon and (I think) armor, and constructs base structures to mine for resources, defense structures for their plot of land and small armies of robot warriors to help them attack other property owners. I played for a short time during the game's beta many years ago, and haven't played since, but by the screenshots on the website it appears that the gameplay and graphics haven't changed much. It's worth the look, I think. Bandwidth problems were handled by having players only able to interact by entering the same plot of land, which is a roughly square mile area surrounded by a high fence that included about ten feet of "retreat space" (not the real name), an area where the player and his/her minions would need to enter in order to teleport back to the home plot or to another area. Several neutral areas were also established where players can interact in a sort of NPC marketplace, where weapons are disabled, etc. Also, no player's plot could be attacked by anyone until that player first attacked someone else, allowing a player to build up their defenses for as long as needed before allowing enemy players to test them. The original name 10six meant "10 to the sixth power", or 1,000,000. A selling point for the game back then was a proposed "1 million players". I think i big problem with your game would be that once a player logs out what would happen to their base/army would it dissapear or would it be open for someone to attack because it would be silly if they left and when they came back someone had taken their base spot... think about it -NecroSen, 14 April 2007 |
