Pixel is a abbreviation of Picture Element. It is the smallest element of a display. Screen sizes are measured in pixels such as 800x600 or 1024x768.

Although pixels are usually square, some older video game consoles (such as the SNES and Genesis) have pixels that are drawn wider than they are high.
