blocked "68.6.74.248" with an expiry time of 3 Months: Same type of spam three days in a row, is this a bot?

I think it's safe to say that most wiki spam is from automated bots that hunt down wikis and spam them. - sik0fewl 13:24, 9 Mar 2005 (EST)

Very sad state of affairs. He/She is probably bragging about being a 'l33t' hacker after 'owning' the wiki.

Well spotted Lucky, you got there before me this time. :)

Indeed.. I'm glad I wasn't the first to come upon it :) Thank god for being away all day. And by the way, Lucky, you can enter the ban time in days, weeks or years instead of hours :) - sik0fewl 18:56, 3 Jan 2005 (EST)

What a complete moron that did the "Massive vandalism"!

He most have manually been visiting and deleting the pages. And for what? For destroying what people have spend a long time creating for the sole purpose of sharing with the world.

Good thing the GPwiki is invurnable to vandalism - he probably spend more time deleting pages than it took rolling back the changes ;) Keep up the good job of keeping the GPwiki clean, spam-police! :)

What sort of expiry time should we use for vandals? I used two weeks, which should be enough for most people, unless they are really persistent, but I noticed Marijn set his for 2 years :) - sik0fewl 04:19, 3 Jan 2005 (EST)

I figured there wasn't much productive content to expect from that person, so two years seemed fine.... --Marijn

That's a good point. - sik0fewl 17:52, 3 Jan 2005 (EST)

Yes, it's lucky I happened to check the recent changes when I did... the vandal made his/her changes just as we were linked by slashdot! It would've sucked to have all those people visit, only to find blank pages :)

As for banning, use whatever time interval seems appropriate to you. You wouldn't be a sysop if I didn't trust your judgement!

the vandal made his/her changes just as we were linked by slashdot -- I think that's more than just coincidence :) - sik0fewl 01:17, 4 Jan 2005 (EST)

Looking at the thread on slashdot, there seem to be some anti-wiki ppl out there (how strange). However, I'm sure it's Wikipedia they have a vendetta against, and not us. :)
Codehead 04:12, 4 Jan 2005 (EST)

Yeah, many of them seem to hate Wikipedia, but I'm hopeful that we can avoid many of the troubles Wikipedia is having. For example, most of the articles posted here can be verified for accuracy... source code is testable, afterall. I don't anticipate we'll have any revert wars, so hopefully we can keep hostility to a minimum.

Almar's Block Expiry Time

Poetic justice with your expiry time, huh Almar? I wonder if anyone else noticed.

I just noticed it's almost my birthday too ;) only one day off :P.

Anyway, I think there's some bot kinda thing posting such links.

--Almar Joling 10:57, 24 Jan 2005 (EST)

btw, before I forget, The backups are still nicely scheduled and downloaded by you every now and then Ryan?

--Almar Joling 10:58, 24 Jan 2005 (EST)

Very l33t, Almar :P And yes, I back up the database nightly. I back up the uploaded files whenever I remember, since they don't change nearly as often. Ryan Clark 12:07, 24 Jan 2005 (EST)
