I realised that I need to play a whole bunch more RPGs if I'm going to make mine any good, so that I know what I'm up against and what has worked/didn't work/sucked/cliched. So here's a potential list that I was thinking of purching:
1. Baldurs Gate 2
2. Escape from monkey island
3. Planescape: Torment
4. Fallout 1 & 2
5. Gothic II
6. Soulbringer
7. Siege of Avalon
8. Arcanum: Of steamworks and magick obscura
9. Stonekeep
10. Revenant
11. A final fantasy (which one, also: they're so damn expensive...)
so, whatcha think??? _________________ Whatever the mind can conceive and believe, it can achieve |

Uhhh. I've only heard of three of those... Only played Final Fantasy 10. You should definately play one good Final Fantasy, preferably seven or ten. Seven, I'm told is worlds better than ten, and I thought ten was absolutely epic. But get prepared for a lot of wasted time and heavy addiction... |

Escape from monkey island: is a funny game witch i liked a lot.
final fantasy 6 and 7 are the best ones if you ask me.
if you own a ps2 i could recomend "Star Ocean: Till the end of time" witch had me hooked for about 85 hours. _________________ I must be the laziest guy around here. |

Hahahah! See ya in 2015!
No seriously, that's a list of some really great RPGs... and a single adventure game too.
I can recommed everything made using BioWares Infinity Engine (Baldur's Gate 1 & 2 + both expansions, Icewind Dale 1 & 2, and Planescape: Torment (or so I've heard - I haven't been able to find it in a store anywhere! ). Also Knights of the Old Republic 1 & 2 also from BioWare.
Fallout's a classic.
I've heard good things about Gothic II.
Arcanum is from Troika (RIP!), and should be good - I can recommend Temple of Elemental Evil (also from Troika) very much!
Instead of Escape from Monkey Island, see if you can dust up The Curse of Monkey Island anywhere - that game is simple fantastic!
I don't know/haven't tried the rest of 'em. Good luck hunting RPGs. But careful - once they're under your skin there's no going back! |

Since you're doing this on your own, you might want to compare yourself to other indie RPG projects, instead of big budget titles. These guys are quite successful:

Is FF7 made for a pc... I dont have a playstation, nor do I intend to get one...
good point ryan, but the selling point of my game will (hopefully) be a great game experience, because I'll never get the same gfx or sound or anything that big buggets have, but I want to play the big budget games to see: oh, they screwed up that but I could make it better. I'm opening up that link though right now... _________________ Whatever the mind can conceive and believe, it can achieve |

The 'Blade of Destiny' series on the Amiga were great RPGs. You might be able to dig up an old version for UAE or similar. _________________ 10 PRINT "Bad Monkey ";

As has been mentioned, the first two monkey islands. I've also heard good things about beneath a steel sky and bladerunner, though i've not played either.
Is there a particular type of rpg you are thinking of making ? Some good 'action' rpgs :
Secret of Mana - action rpg, good multiplayer fun, a bit like zelda with levelling and stuff... (snes emulator)
Ultima 8 - considered by some not to be the best. But I found it to be a good laugh, and wandering out into the wilderness usually turns up something interesting without getting too tedious. (PC-DOS)
Little Big Adventure - Very quirky isometric game. Game environment is wacky but holds together well (PC-DOS) |

| If you're going to go emulator, get Solomon's Key for NES. No, it's not an RPG, in the sense that it doesn't suck. Instead, it rules and you will bow down before it. |

I have BASS sat right in front of me, it's on a retro cover disk. Try url]http://www.scummvm.org/[/url] for Monkey Island, Full Throttle, BASS and many more. _________________ 10 PRINT "Bad Monkey ";

I personally recommend Fallout 1 and 2. Try to get the first one and play that first though as I think its better and sets up the story for the second a little more.
I'm playing through Arcanium now, and I reckon its pretty good. The best part is the character creation, next time though I'm going to be a Nietzche Love Child
I personally dislike the final fantasy series (I think I might be the only one) it seems like a story with random combat thrown in. _________________ Attack of the Meeplings - Free 2D Arcade Shooter

1. Baldurs Gate 2 -- Haven't played
2. Escape from monkey island -- Haven't played
3. Planescape: Torment -- Didn't like
4. Fallout 1 & 2 -- Fallout 1 is good, haven't played 2
5. Gothic II -- Great game! As is the first
6. Soulbringer -- Isn't that a fighting game?
7. Siege of Avalon -- Never heard of it
8. Arcanum: Of steamworks and magick obscura -- Never heard of it..
9. Stonekeep -- Never heard of it
10. Revenant -- Never heard of it
11. A final fantasy -- The original is good, as is the second (Japanese version, which you could emulate and download the translated version), 5 (Another Japanese one, translated) and 6 (3 in North America) The ones after 6 are crap, don't bother.
Also: Dragon Warrior is a great series, with 4 games for the NES, 2 more (Japanese) for SNES and 1 for the PSX.
What else... ADOM is an awesome rogue-like game, and a must play. (It's free!)
Vampire - The Masquerade: Blood Lines is a good game too, and fairly new. |

| I have FF7 for the PC. If you get it and need a good patch for XP, I can give it to you (it's pretty old!) Very fun. |

But when you've eaten the entire cake you'll sometimes be disappointed in how fast the cake disappeared, and feel bad the next time you step onto a bathroom scales. [Translate any way you'll like ] |
